Owen Livingston is from Lumberton, New Jersey and is a sophomore. Owen is majoring in Management with a concentration in Business Management Consulting and Analytics (MCA) and is currently adding a minor in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE).

Owen will participate in an internship with the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond in the summer of 2023.

We asked Owen to share both his internship and Pamplin experiences with us.

How did you find your internship? What is your title and what will you do for them?

I focused my search on companies in the consulting, banking, and  financial services sector, and was especially interested in companies in the Northeast, and ideally in Virginia. While I was rejected from the original position I applied for at the Richmond Fed, my recruiter believed in me and passed on my information to another hiring manager after an excellent interview. From there I was interviewed again and able to secure the internship. At the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, I will be an Auditing Intern in the Auditing Department.

What do you think will be your favorite part of the internship?

I am excited for my internship at the Richmond Fed, and the ability to learn more about the auditing process in a real life setting from some of the most experienced and respected leaders in the field. I am passionate about learning new things and this internship will provide me that opportunity, and cannot wait to find out more about the type of work and projects I will be on, and build relationships with all my new fellow interns and leaders at the Richmond Fed.

What type of student would you recommend to apply to this internship and why?

Students that would consider an internship with the Richmond Fed would be those interested in auditing and accounting, in addition to those in economics or business and want to learn more about what other avenues are in the business world, since auditing blends our education in accounting, finance, and management, and there are many other types of internships at the Richmond Fed beyond the audit focused roles.

What do you want to do after graduation?

After graduation I would love to apply my experiences in the consulting or the banking and financial services sector!

What advice would you give to an incoming Pamplin freshman?

Some advice I would give to incoming freshmen would be to get involved in Pamplin and the opportunities they offer. I am an Analyst with the Consulting Group at Virginia Tech which has helped propel my interest in consulting while preparing me for a career leveraging what I have learned, especially in applying analytics in real world settings. In addition, Pamplin offers an incredible variety of opportunities to connect with our amazing professors and be introduced to great companies.

What is your favorite part about being a management and or Pamplin student?

My favorite part of being a management and Pamplin student is that I can blend my love for business and analytics within a major that seems like it was made for me. Also, the professors and professional opportunities have always been very supportive.

If any, what organizations are you in and what do you enjoy about them?

I’m actually involved with several organizations on campus that keep me very busy! In addition to being an Analyst in the Consulting Group at Virginia Tech (CGVT), I am a member of the Management Society and the Hokie Fintech clubs. Both these clubs have been provided excellent opportunities to learn more about these disciplines, the businesses in these fields and build my network. I am also a brother in the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon where I also enjoy providing service to the local Blacksburg community.
