Graduation Year: 2024
Major: Management Consulting and Analytics, Business Information Technology
Company and Position: I will be working for PwC in the future, and I got the full time job as a return offer from when I interned with them. I was able to network with PwC through Pamplin's career fairs, networking sessions, and on campus recruiters. Events like the Management breakfast before business horizons also helped me expand my network and connect with recruiters from various companies. My full time job title is "Business Process Consulting Associate" at PwC, and I'll be working in the Cyber, Risk, and Regulatory sector within the consulting/advisory side of the company. During my internship I was able to work on tasks that involved IT requirements testing, data analytics, project management, and documentation.
Internship Location: My full time job will be located in Washington D.C.! I am super excited to be working there again!
Recruitment Process: The recruitment process went smoothly! Virginia Tech has a great community of students who you can connect with for advice about interviews. I was able to connect with someone who had an internship with the company before (also a Pamplin student) and she was able to mentor me in terms of what I could expect in an internship there. Being able to tap into this connected community really aided me in knowing what to expect during my internship.
Looking Forward To: I'm looking forward to making new connections and to see how the skills and information I've gained in college will be applied in industry!
Advice: My piece of advice would be to keep your mind open when exploring your interests and to build a network around you along the way. It is so important to make sure you would be open to any type of opportunity, big or small-- especially with consulting. There are always opportunities for you to grow professionally, whether they are soft skills or technical skills. Even if you don't like a certain area of the field, it is important to experience it before making up your mind! Make sure that through all these experiences that you are making connections with the peers and mentors around you. Having a good network can go a long way! You'll have access to so many more insights and opinions through your network, and it is the best way to ensure that you are always taking in new knowledge, and not closing yourself off to any new opportunities.
Recommended Student: I would reccomend any student that is interested in both the IT and mangerial side of things to apply to this job. Although day to day tasks were dealing with testing, some IT background is required, and can be helpful when talking to cross functional teams. There are a lot of roles within the company that focus more on data analytics, project management, human resources, and other areas that pertain to the Management major at VT!
Favorite Part of Pamplin: My favorite part of being a management student is the amazing, supportive community of faculty, peers, and administration we have! It is such an amazing feeling to know that you are well supported by the department around you through internship opportunities, networking events, and the supportive atmosphere that all the faculty have worked to build. Knowing that the department holds student opinions with such a high regard ensures that Management at VT is a tight knit community with so much to offer!
Mentor or Inspiration: Over the past few years, many faculty members have played roles as mentors/sources of inspiration in my academic journey, significantly contributing to my growth and development. Their support has been a big part in shaping me both professionally and as a leader! Engaging with various initiatives within the department has provided me with opportunities to connect with faculty, from whom I have gained invaluable insights and advice. Dr. Gnyawali, Professor Poff, Professor Deck, Professor Buengel, Professor Slagel, Professor Williamson, and Professor Raschke have each been an immense source of inspiration for me and I can't thank them enough for all their help and support!
