Alexis McCafferty is from Manassas, Virginia and uses she/her pronouns. She is a junior majoring in Management Consulting.

Alexis McCafferty will be interning for Burlington in the summer of 2023.

We asked Alexis to share both her internship and Pamplin experiences with us.

How did you find your internship? What is your title and what will you do for them?

I have recently accepted a Buying Intern position with Burlington in their corporate office in New York City, where I will be analyzing consumer buying trends in their stores and making decisions as to how Burlington should move forward towards better profitability. I found this internship through Handshake, where I was contacted by a Burlington recruiter about the position, saying that I would be a great fit for the position.

What do you think will be your favorite part about the internship?

I think that my favorite part of my internship this summer will be meeting others from all over the country, coming together to reach a common goal of bettering Burlington's profitability and consumer buying trends. Also, through this experience, I know that I will be fully immersed in the fashion/retail industry and their corporate endeavors, which is a route that I could see myself going in in the near future.

What type of student would you recommend to apply to this internship and why?

I would recommend a student who is concentrating on the MCA option of Business Management here at Virginia Tech, someone who is very analytical in their thinking and can gather a lot of information from a dataset. This role is one that requires a candidate who can take a piece of data and draw conclusions as to how the business can improve their operations/profitability, and one who is good with discovering the meaning behind numbers would be a fantastic fit for an analyst role such as this.

What do you want to do after graduation?

After graduation, I would love to move to Florida or California to work for The Walt Disney Company as an analyst for their parks and movies. I have previously attained an internship experience with Disney through their Disney College Program, and being a part of a company, whose organizational culture is very welcoming, with a strong mission of creating magic for millions around the world, has been very rewarding to where I would love to contribute through the corporate sector.

What advice would you give to an incoming Pamplin freshman?

Advice that I would give to incoming freshmen would be to constantly improve your professional social media profiles, as recruiters are always looking at how you market yourself, and how you present your professional skills.

What is your favorite part about being a management and or Pamplin student?

My favorite part of being a management student is that there are so many different opportunities that are right within your grasp, due to Pamplin's ability to give you the most academic variety. Virginia Tech's business college is honestly one of the best in the country, to where they allow for you to take classes with a lot of subject variety. This way you are best prepared to make decisions on what internship opportunities you go for, as well as which career path you want to go into specifically.

If any, what organizations are you in and what do you enjoy about them?

Currently, I am a member of two student-led organizations. The first organization that I am a part of is Dance Company at Virginia Tech, which is a dance organization where our company reaches out to the community through our love for dance. Dance has always been a huge part of my life, and getting to share my love for the sport as well as contributing back to my community through fundraising and volunteering events is very rewarding. I am also an executive member of Women in Cybersecurity here at Virginia Tech, where I serve as Secretary of the organization. Women in Cyber is a very important club here at Virginia Tech, uplifting women in a highly male-dominated industry and maintaining a very inclusive culture to where many different majors can join, which I think is very inspiring.
