Expanding Horizons: Study Abroad Programs Highlight Business, Culture, and Leadership Across the Globe
January 22, 2025
This winter, Virginia Tech students embarked on a series of transformative study abroad programs spanning five countries: Austria, Germany, Spain, New Zealand, and Australia. These immersive experiences, offered participants a unique opportunity to gain insights into business practices, cultural diversity, and leadership styles in some of the most dynamic regions of the world.
Australia and New Zealand: Leadership in the Asia-Pacific
Faculty led by Professor Rex Water, the journey began with an exploration of the Asia-Pacific business environment, leadership philosophies, and cultural heritage in Australia and New Zealand. The program kicked off in Cairns, Australia, where students spent six days diving into the natural wonders of the Great Barrier Reef and hiking through lush rainforests. The itinerary then moved to Sydney, where participants engaged in classroom lectures, executive speaker sessions, and business site visits, while also experiencing the vibrant city life.
From Sydney, the group traveled to Auckland, New Zealand, where they explored the country’s reputation as a hub of adventure and eco-tourism. Highlights included visits to Piha Beach, Kite Kite Falls, and the Waitakere Ranges, as well as cultural excursions to Waiheke Island, Hobbiton, and Auckland’s urban landmarks. Throughout the trip, students gained practical insights into the regional business landscape and leadership practices while building cultural and international competence.
Austria and Germany: Business and Cross-Cultural Competence in Western Europe
The Austria-Germany segment focused on Western Europe’s business dynamics and cultural richness. Students toured domestic and multinational companies, gaining firsthand knowledge of business operations in a global context. Visits to historical and cultural sites provided additional depth, allowing participants to develop a nuanced understanding of the region’s history, geography, and cultural influences.
This program led by Professor Margie Deck and Ron Poff emphasized cross-cultural competence and teamwork, equipping students with the confidence to navigate international environments and appreciate cultural differences. The result was a comprehensive understanding of how business operates in Germany, Austria, and the broader Western European region.
Spain: Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Spain served as the backdrop for a program centered on business innovation and entrepreneurship. Participants visited five cities—Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Cordoba, and Madrid—engaging with company leaders and exploring startup ecosystems. With a focus on innovative strategies and leadership styles, the program also included extensive cultural exploration, fostering a deeper appreciation for Spain’s vibrant heritage.
Faculty led by Professor Eli Jamison classes and excursions challenged students to work collaboratively in small teams, promoting leadership and problem-solving skills. The program catered to both undergraduate and graduate students, providing tailored learning experiences to enhance their academic and professional development.

These programs exemplify the value of immersive international education. Students not only earned academic credit but also cultivated interpersonal leadership skills, emotional intelligence, and cultural awareness—qualities essential in today’s globalized world. From the eco-tourism of New Zealand to the entrepreneurial spirit of Spain, each destination enriched participants’ understanding of how businesses function and cultures thrive across continents.
