The Department of Management would like to highlight faculty member Dr. Trey Lewis.

Dr. Trey Lewis is a Professor and researcher within the Management department. Dr. Lewis has a background within entrepreneurship and teaches strategic management. Dr. Lewis completed both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at James Madison University and recently completed his PhD at the University of Tennessee. Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, Dr. Lewis has worked and been a leader within higher education for 15 years. Notably, Dr. Lewis served as the Executive Director of the Career Development Center at the University of Louisville. Dr. Lewis’s drive for entrepreneurship, research, and working with students has led him to Virginia Tech.

Dr. Lewis’s work with students, entrepreneurs, and startups have guided the research that he does today. He is interested in the startup process and the steps entrepreneurs must take to ultimately launch and scale their businesses. He is concerned with the way individuals think about and exercise agency in the process of starting up and why individuals do and sometimes elect not to do things that would likely bring the entrepreneurial outcomes that they desire.

One of Dr. Lewis’s favorite parts about his job is being challenged by his students and engaging with them on a higher level. Dr. Lewis says the faculty within the Management department is world-class and their thought leadership is second to none. He views himself as a great fit for the management department. When asked why he chose Virginia Tech, Dr. Lewis stated that he is originally from Richmond, Virginia and always wanted to return to serve the Commonwealth in some way. He says that the Virginia Tech motto, “Ut Prosim”, aligns perfectly with his personal belief system and that Virginia Tech has an appreciation for the areas of research he is interested in.

Outside of work, Dr. Lewis loves to spend time with his wife and preteen. He enjoys exercise/basketball and tries to stay civically engaged with his community. Dr. Lewis is also an avid LeBron James fan.

Dr. Lewis’s advice to incoming Pamplin freshman would be to “develop and understand where your interests lie. It’s never too early to be engaged and involved in the activities, events, and opportunities that Pamplin provides. These will help you find your interests and possibly even a career field you may want to work in.”
