The Department of Management would like to highlight faculty member Dave Bluey.

Dave Bluey is an Assistant Professor of Practice and Career Advisor within the Management department. He teaches courses such as strategic management, careers in management, and foundations of business. He got his masters and undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and went to Dartmouth’s Tuck Business School for graduate studies. He began his career as a pharmaceutical representative for Wyeth laboratories. Professor Bluey later worked for Pfizer as a national sales manager for the hospital division and later moved to product/brand management. Professor Bluey went on to become an executive manager for Pfizer working with marketing, sales, new product acquisition and strategic planning. His most impactful position was a three year stint as the assistant to the president and director of strategic planning and innovation. At the end of his Pfizer career, professor Bluey moved back to Pittsburgh, PA for a few years to take care of his parents. After he’s Pfizer career, he moved down to Blacksburg with his wife where 2 of his 3 kids went to Virginia Tech. He worked as CEO of a specialized medical clinic and later became vice president for advancement for a statewide non-profit agency serving children and adults with various disabilities with offices in Salem and Richmond. Professor Bluey also worked at a local theater complex where he enjoyed learning about working in the movie exhibitor retail market. He was later recruited to be an assistant professor of practice in the Pamplin College of Business’ management department. Professor Bluey presently teaches strategic management, foundations of business, careers in management and functions as the department’s career advisor.

Professor Bluey says he’s favorite part about his job is teaching and getting to know students. He enjoys preparing students for their careers and the real world. Outside of work, Professor Bluey loves to travel and learn about new cultures. He has been to Scandinavia, Eastern & Western Europe, Russia, India, Australia, New Zealand, as well as many other places. He loves learning about the history and culture of the places he visits. He says he has yet to explore South America and that it’s next on his list. Professor Bluey also grew up in Pittsburgh, PA where he was exposed to a plethora of different cultures and cuisines such as Italian, Asian, Middle Eastern and Polish foods.

Professor Bluey’s advice to incoming Pamplin Freshmen would be to “Absolutely enjoy school while you are here. You will look back at it as some of the best years of your life and the four years go by really quick.”
