Biography

Eli completed her Ph.D. in Virginia Tech’s ASPECT program (Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical, and Cultural Thought) in 2015 with concentrations in social and political thought and earned the Women and Gender Studies (WGS) Graduate Certificate. Previously, she earned her M.B.A. at Vanderbilt University with dual concentrations in Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior. 

Eli’s teaches a variety of courses for the Management department including Ethical Leadership, talent management courses in the human resources management major, strategic management, and a Pathways course on  pop culture that focuses on the global industry of superheroes. She also leads the winter Pamplin Study abroad trip to Spain.

A practitioner-scholar, Eli has over thirty years of experience working with a cross-section of public, private, and nonprofit sector organizations. She is a co-founder of Bookend Consulting, LLC which specializes in consulting services designed to improve the effectiveness and equitability of human interactions in the workplace. When she finds time for her research, her interests focus on interdisciplinary questions at the intersection of power, social responsibility, and policy leading to socially just and effective outcomes applicable from classrooms to organizations. Her research has focused on immigrant labor, corporate social responsibility, refugee integration, inclusive pedagogy, and student team development. Eli has applied research activity in areas of leadership, general education, and feminist pedagogy. 

Eli has presented her research nationally and internationally, and her work has been published as book chapters, as an article in SPECTRA:  The Social, Political, Ethical, and Cultural Theory Archives, and as proceedings in the 2017 International Association for Business in Society. Recently, she became affiliated with Virginia Tech’s ECAR Action Planning efforts through the Center for Refugee, Migrant, and Displacement Studies, and she served as a peer reviewer of the AHLAN Manual: A Manual for Establishing Resettlement Campuses Together. 

Lastly, Eli has been a member of the Roanoke City School Board since 2017 and presently serves as Chair. She has a husband and an assortment of pets who all live happily together in Roanoke, Virginia.
